Killara Lodge Day Centre | dementia specific facility,

northam respite centre

Client: Shire of Northam

Location: Northam, Western Australia

Description: Dementia Specific Facility

Construction Value: $3.0m

Status: Completed 2014

An extension to the existing Facility these are two 8 Bed Respite Houses for the Shire of Northam. The intent here is for the Day Centre to blend into the surroundings and street scape and offer a home like environment for mostly dementia residents.

Key issues considered for the residents were scale and proportion of spaces, visual cueing, calming landscaped gardens and ease of movement inside the houses and in the courtyards.

Site lines were a key consideration for staff supervision and by capping the number of residents in one area to 8 will contribute to a calming ambience. It is so successful the residents get confused when they have to go "home".
